Industry Spotlight: Our Expertise in Geotechnical Component Machining

Our partnerships with companies in the geotechnical sector have offered our team the opportunity to dig deep into our precision machining services, no pun intended. Serving one of our largest customers in this field has presented some of our most challenging, unique projects, pushing us to think outside the box while still adhering to the stringent wear resistance requirements that are the norm in this industry.

Our commitment to precision and reliability for our customers in this field has led to some memorable moments in our company’s history. At KCSP Machine, we’re dedicated to going the extra mile—sometimes literally, as you’ll read below—ensuring we meet our customers’ needs no matter what.

Here's a closer look at why KCSP Machine is a trusted partner in geotechnical manufacturing and how we excel in this demanding industry.

Our Customer-Focused Approach: A Quick Anecdote

Before we discuss specifics, we’d like to share an anecdote about a happy accident—something that started out wrong but ended up completely right.

Years back, we had an order mix-up with our top geotechnical customer. We had two scheduled deliveries for them, and we accidentally completed and sent out the second order before the one they wanted first—a mistake that could have been extremely problematic if it wasn’t for our agility and commitment to customer service. Our previous owner, passionate about pleasing our customers, discovered the mistake and immediately took action. Over the weekend, he completed the correct parts, loaded up his own truck, and drove three and a half hours across state lines to our customer’s shop. He arrived at precisely 7:00 AM on Monday, right as their team was starting the workday, to hand-deliver their components precisely when they needed them in the first place. Needless to say, the customer was quite pleased.

It’s a story that’s become part of our lore at KCSP Machine. It serves as the ongoing touch stone for our service commitment. This customer continues to partner with our precision machine shop, and we continue to go above and beyond in producing and delivering their components.

Precision Machined Parts for the Geotechnical Industry

Our work with geotechnical components centers around the massive drilling and sampling rigs our customers produce, which can tackle some of the toughest terrains. Here’s a look at some of the critical components we manufacture for this industry:

Output Housing

geotechnical

At 25 pounds, these output housings are the largest and heaviest components we produce here at KCSP Machine. They must withstand heavy loads, high torque, and extreme drilling conditions.

Floating Housing and CAM Follower Housing

These parts, critical supports for drilling rigs, are engineered for long-term endurance and precision in demanding environments.

Nuts, Fasteners, and Other Connectors

In addition to these larger-scale components, our team also produces small fasteners and connectors that secure these housing components together with precision.

Prototype Parts

As the geotechnical industry evolves, we’re right there with it. Our team works with our customers’ engineers to prototype new parts, allowing us to support their ideas from concept to production.

The Role of Material and Coating in Geotechnical Component Manufacturing

Geotechnical components must be corrosion-resistant and durable enough to withstand extreme drilling procedures. Here’s a closer look at the materials and processes we use to ensure our parts are built to last.

Steel with Ferritic Nitrocarburizing (FNC)

Steel is a top choice for geotechnical components, but it’s rarely left untreated. We apply an FNC process to enhance wear resistance, hardness, and corrosion protection—essential for parts that must survive grueling, high-intensity work.

Heat Treatments and Zinc Coating

Most geotechnical parts we send out are heat-treated or zinc-coated for additional durability and corrosion resistance needed in the field.

Partner with KCSP Machine for Geotechnical Part Manufacturing

Geotechnical projects are some of our favorite challenges. Each part requires a unique approach and a combination of capabilities. Our parts stand up to the test, whether it’s the heaviest output housing or a precision-engineered fastener. Here’s how we stand out:

  • Location, location, location! Our location in Kansas City puts us close to the heart of the oil and drilling industries: Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska. We’re ideally positioned to support this sector, delivering parts seamlessly and quickly.

  • Large parts? Bring it on. Our advanced CNC machining services can easily handle the big, heavy components common in this industry.

  • Short runs, complex work. Though our company made a name for itself with our higher-volume turned pieces, our team doesn’t back down from short-run intricate parts. These complex pieces are some of the most interesting and challenging projects we take on, and we’re always excited to tackle them.

If you’re in the geotechnical industry and need a reliable precision machining partner, KCSP Machine has the experience to handle your most demanding jobs. Request a quote to get started!
